Sewing Wednesday: Parka Coat Detachable Hood

While I’ve been documenting my days sewing I realised how slow I’m working at the moment; If I’m honest, I’m a little unmotivated right now. I’m worried the quantity of my work is really lacking and also I haven’t many designs which is what I’m putting my lack of motivation and toiles down to. There is still time this week to do designs so everything should be 100% for next weeks fitting on Tuesday. I also find that I work better during the evening/night, as shown below. I would rather be a morning person but I’m just not… but I do love being up early but late nights and early mornings don’t mix well…

18:00…. Started editing the hood patterns

Some time later…. Started sewing the hood

03:42… Finished for the night.

04.00… zzzz….

*Sew the left extension straight along the front so it lies flat when the velcro is in place.

*sew the bottom flap on last after the lining has been attached, then sew it right sides together and leave a section in the middle to turn it out. Then top stitch both flaps.

* sew elastic loops on the fur strip before sewing BUT after you’ve planned out the placement of the little buttons which run along the facing and lining.

*find the side seams on both of the flaps and then sew on the buttons

Tuesday Sewing: Parka Coat Toile no.2

10:00… Got up late after stressing about not having a garment complete for todays fitting… S***!

11:30-14:00… Tidied my flat, washed the dishes, attempted to do the laundry but both of the washing machines were in use, then made pancakes. Lemon and sugar YUM!

14:00… Started working on the coat toile I was sewing on Saturday. The first change is to edit the shape of the left side zip extension.

*Make sure all the front pieces are the same length (on the patterns) and the side seams match up because there seams to be a discrepancy at centre front but most importantly the left facing is too short (?!?!).

16:30… Finished correcting the left side zip extension. Now time for lunch čÖé

* The extension was 1.5cm longer than the zip but that can either be chopped off when sewing or change the pattern as stated above.

19:37… I’ve spent the last few hours eating a late lunch, looking at jobs on and quickly nipping to the shop for Marmite. Because that’s essential. It’s my fave! Also, if you haven’t already read, you must read Taylor Swift’s article on titled ’30 Things I learned Before Turning 30′, it’s a great little read. And now I’m listening to Taylor Swift’s music to motivate me while I begin to attach the collar.

21:15… ┬áCheeky late night snack of BBQ Pringles.

??:??…And I may have forgotten to update anymore but I kept on sewing until like 22:30/23:00 ish… I’m back on it tomorrow (it’s currently 00:55 so this post is technically the next day but you know what I mean)

Saturday Sewing: Parka Coat Toile no.2

A little diary of myself making a parka coat for my final collection at university studying fashion design. Happy reading!

12:00-14:00… I spent two hours sewing the back of the coat and then realised I didn’t know how to line it so I had to unpick it all… That was annoying to say the least.

14:00-15:10… I ate lunch, watched YouTube videos and looked at technical drawings on Pinterest of parka coats to see if I could work out the split tail at the back. I’m still clueless.

15:10…I’ve decided to work on the front of the coat instead. I can do this. Lets see how this goes… *music on: Nao’s album ‘Saturn’ *hair up

18:10… Completed the right side: zip and zip guard. It has taken me a long time because I had to change the facing to fit the cord channel.

*make a note to edit all the patterns effected: facing, collar, front panel & channel.

*make the zip guard longer by 0.5mm

18:15…. Dinner! I think I’m going to try and make vegan pancakes…

18:50… I mixed up a batch using soya milk, egg replacement and flour. Fingers crossed!

20:15… Pancakes were lush! Now back to sewing. I’m going to begin sewing the zip on the left side of the coat and then attach the flap.

20:55… Had to unpick and add 2cm in width on the left zip extension. UGH!

21:14… Lets start the left zip again…

23:00… Finished the zip and it lines up perfectly to centre front HOWEVER I need to shape the top slightly so it runs in line with the neck line. It’s going well though čÖé

00:00… zzz…

I’ve written my to-do-list for tomorrow and Monday. I need to get everything done by 10am Tuesday for my second model fitting. I do have work tomorrow (9-5) but I still have the evening to get a few things ticked off.

Thanks for reading,
